Installing crown molding (or moulding). This page is the last page in the tutorial and is a step by step photo essay on making a crown moulding mantle shelf using a crown cut flat as the example.

Top to fence Miter Miter setting Bevel setting Bevel Measure from one inch at bottom for lengths Outside right cut Mark and deduct the inch Miter setting Bevel setting Bottom to fence Outside left cut Save right side of cut for both outside corners Both corners cut for returns at the mantle sides For wall lengths you measure at the bottom 6 1/4 inch mantle returns But for returns you measure from the top Then cut straight from that mark Line up with other return and mark 6 1/4 return and a 7 inch shelf marked at 3/4 The mantle side set back 3/4 The mantle front on the set back line Now router the shelf 1/2 inch round over for shelf bottom Glue inside line Glue return and place on lines Align corners and pin Cut bottom out of 1/2 MDF pin and glue in place Repeat for other side and pin front Rip a bevel at 30 degrees about 3 inches wide out of 3/4 stock Pin and glue into the back Cut to 38 degrees The bevel will act as a hanger the arrow to the wall Fill the nail holes Repeat for other side and pin front Prime Mantle shelf paint and you are done (707) 823-5145
For cutting in position this protractor for under $40 is the best, it gives you the miter setting in red, the angle in black.
This is an amazing deal right now at amazon. I use the porter cable finishing guns. I wish it was on when I bought mine.
