The Gardening Barn Project
1 story, slab on grade, design build
The complete project

I designed this one to be inexpensive and to be productive for the owners who are avid gardeners. A sheltered out door work area and interior work and storage.

"I couldn't have asked for a better job, we are very happy, thank-you Gordon!!"
The home owners.

This is such a small project I've just placed the thumbnails, hold your mouse over the image for the short explanations, if you have any questions just use the Alter Eagle forum.
I built this project by myself in 4 weeks, using part of our crew on the foundation and the roofing subcontractor, so this is a very good D.I.Y. project.

Layiung out the lines for excavation.
Setting the stakes for elevation and placement.
Builders transit to shoot levels for grade and backhoe for excavation.
Once we have grade excavate for the slabs monolithic footings.
Place 6 mil vapor barrier and add fill now so you won't need to move the fill by hand later.
Place forms and add rebar min. of 2 #4 for the footings.

Excavation

Bring forms up to match the minimum height from finish grade to bottom of sheathing. We like to keep it 8
Placing the rebar, keep it at 18
Place the steel 10 / 10 mesh (or #3 rebar) and tamp the fill. We also wetted down the fill for voids. The 2x4 across the center is for a screed to keep the slab floor level when moving the concrete into place.
On a smaller job like this we move the concrete truck rather than use a pump when we can get the access.

Forms and Rebar

Fill the footings first and let them set before you go back to the slab.
Place the foundation bolts, and round over the edges of the slab.
An extension on the bull float smooths the slab after it has been screeded to level.
After it's set enough to walk on and no more moisture is penetrating do a first finish with hand trowels.
The second run over with hand trowels. Once that has dried apply sealer.

Concrete finish on interior slab

Exterior portion of the slab. These have different finishes and the ext. needs to slope so they are done in 2 pores.
Screeding this one is from the slab pored yesterday to the form.
I start applying plates and framing while the crew slopes out the exterior slab with the screed board.
I lay out for the top plates and bolt down the treated sill plate, 4' on center 5/8 bolts with 2x2 plate washers here in CA
2x4 at 16 on center for the walls, temp bracing for plumb. I use a fold down chop saw set up, speeds up the work rather than use a circ saw and keeps the cuts perfect.

Exterior slab, plates & framing

4x8 df beam on 4x4 posts at front porch. Using simpson connectors, the wall framing completed.
The interior framed with the cross ventilation windows. The french doors framed, leave the plates across the door openings for alignment.
Ridge beam od 2x10 2x6 raters at 24 o/c and the barge rafters cut for the lookouts.
Solid blocking at interior wall fly rafters placed and starting roof sheathing.
Gable framing completed

Wall & roof framing

Roof sheathing completed. 1/2 osb structural ext. ply 6
T1-11 structural 5/8 siding, gables and walls completed and staring on 1x4 pre-primed and painted trims.
Windows and doors hot hot hot week as I recall seeing this picture now.
I sprayed the siding and soffits and fascias with solid stain as soon as I got them installed, then went back and applied the trim.
