To determine spacing, I usually look at the moisture content of the decking, if it is low in content I would use 1/8 spacing or more, if it is high in moisture content I would space them closer to 1/16.
Of course galv. screws are the best, but are restrictive in the labor costs.
If you are using 2nd growth redwood, with the less dense grain orientation I would suggest to seal all six sides before you place them.
Check every few rows with a string line to make sure your layout is straight, and when you are getting close to the house, place the final rows so that you don't get caught with a thin rip and space accordingly.
Don't forget to flash over the ledger...
